[Introduction] [Reformations] [Problems underlying problems] [Structure]

Introduction

The La Salle College Student Association, which will be celebrating its silver jubilee in year 2000, rooted from the original La Salle College Students' Council (which itself was the first student representative body in La Salle College.)

In 1955, under the leadership of Patrick Chan, the Students' Council was established through the cooperation of a group of enthusiastic and zealous students.

Reformations

Through the 43 years history of the LSC Students' Council/Student Association, four full-scale reformations were carried out, each of which caused a major impact on the structure of the student representative body.

The first reform was carried out in 1959. At that time, the main task of the Students' Council was to maintain discipline among the students. Gradually, the Students' Council became a congregation consisted of prefects and discipline-controlling working members. As a result, the Prefects Board was established in 1959 to replace the Students' Council as the sole student representative body in La Salle College.

In 1965, a complete reform of the Prefects Board was suggested by student Jack So (who is now the CEO of MTR corp.). The reform was made to emphasize the student representative body's function of protecting the well being and welfare of the students. The chief achievement of the second reform was the restoration of the original Students' Council system.

However, this rebirth of the Students' Council was rather short-lived. Soon after the second reform, the Students' Council system was once again abolished. The school authority proclaimed the renunciation of the Students' Council system due to twofold reasons. Firstly, most students at that time were reluctant to contribute their valuable time to the duty of the Students' Council. Secondly, the principal, Rev. Brother Felix, preferred the Prefects Board system to the Students' Council system because of the former superior structure and organization. Hence, the Prefects Boards system was re-established in place of the Students' Council. This was the so-called 'Third Reformation'.

The final evolution took place in 1974. Head prefect of the 1974-75 academic year, Philip Yan, suggested to modify the structure of the Prefects Board into a more functional, better organized student representative body, which was similar to today's La Salle College Student Association. This was the fourth and the last major reform in the history of LSC Students' Council/Student Association.

Problems underlying problems

In late 1960s, due to insufficient control and supervision, many student societies encountered financial and managerial problems. With a bid to deal with the situation, the principal, Rev. Brother Raphael Egan, decided that a Central Coordinating Board should be set up in 1972 to remedy the problems concerning these clubs and societies.

However, rather than bearing a positive impact on the situation, the establishment of the Central Coordinating Board exacerbated the problems. Because of the ambiguity concerning the division of labor between the Central Coordinating Board and the Prefects Board, miscommunication and conflicts arose between the two boards, creating troubles like overlapping of works, wasting of manpower, confusion in assignment of tasks, etc. To devise a solution to these adverse effects, it was finally agreed that a Student Association should be setup to take charge of the jobs originally taken up by the two boards. As a result, the La Salle College Student Association was established in 1975.
